Oil supply via Iraq-Turkey pipeline resumed

Supplies of Iraqi oil to Turkey through the Kirkuk-Yumurtalik oil pipeline blown up Monday in the Turkish province of Sirnak, have been resumed, Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said on Tuesday, the Zaman newspaper reported.

The cause of the explosion was sabotage by members of the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party, PKK.

Previously, PKK militants repeatedly made a diversion at this pipeline. Last time it was blown up in early August when oil pumping to Turkey was halted for a week.

The 970-kilometre (600-mile) pipeline runs from Iraq's northern oil hub of Kirkuk to the port of Ceyhan on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, pumping 450,000 to 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

Iraq depends on oil sales for the vast majority of government income. The oil-rich nation exported some 2.515 million barrels per day in July, earning about $7.535 billion in revenues.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state has been on-going for more than 25 years.

The PKK group is recognised as a terrorist organisation by the UN and the European Union.
