Turkmenistan eyes liquefied gas export via Azerbaijan
Turkmenistan's state service on maritime transport is studying the possibility of transporting liquefied gas in special containers to the seaport in Azerbaijan's capital Baku and further to Europe through neighboring Georgia, the state news service Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary (TDH) reported on Tuesday.
So, Turkmenistan, participating in the project as a supplier, could supply liquefied natural gas across the Caspian Sea to Azerbaijan for its further transit to European markets.
Negotiations are underway, and the issue of supply of Turkmen liquefied gas to Europe via the Romanian port of Constanta (Black Sea region) is being studied, the report says.
It is planned that liquefied gas will be transported in special containers to the Baku Port by vessels of the Turkmen merchant fleet, and further to the Georgian ports of Batumi or Poti on the Black Sea via railway. Then containers will be delivered by ships to Romania or other Black Sea countries. The same scheme can be applied to other Turkmen goods, which can be transported in containers.
Earlier Turkmenistan expressed interest in the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania Interconnector (AGRI) pipeline project, which envisages transporting Azerbaijani liquefied natural gas via pipelines to the Black Sea coast of Georgia. The gas will be liquefied at a special terminal there and will then be delivered to a terminal at the Romanian port of Constanta via tankers. Later, the LNG will be brought into the state of natural gas and used to meet the needs of Romania and other European countries.
