Socar ups gas supplies to Russia

Azerbaijani state energy firm Socar exports 4 million cubic meters of gas per day to Russia compared to 2.4 million cubic meters as of May 18, an oil and gas industry source told Trend news agency last Thursday.

Azerbaijan`s gas supplies to the neighboring country started on January 1, 2010. Gas is supplied under the contract signed by Socar and Russian gas giant Gazprom in Baku in October 2009.

According to an addendum to the contract signed in September 2010, Gazprom was to receive 2 billion cubic meters in 2011 and over 2 billion in 2012. However, Russia did not receive the full amount of the supplies last year.

An additional agreement to double the gas volume imported by Russia was signed by the parties in Sochi on January 24, 2012.

The energy industry source also said gas supplies to Iran under swap operations continue.

``At present, 1 million cubic meters of gas per day is supplied to Iran to provide the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with gas,`` it said.

The two countries are linked with the 1,474 kilometer Gazi-Muhammad-Astara (Azerbaijan)-Bind-Biand (Iran) pipeline that has annual capacity of 10 billion cubic meters.
