EU says its stance on Caspian gas unchanged
The European Commission`s position on Caspian gas has not changed though Europe has decided to increase gas supplies from Russia, a source at the EC told the Baku-based Trend news agency on Wednesday.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin during their talks in Berlin last week discussed the possibility of doubling the capacity of Nord Stream pipeline to include the third and fourth lines running under the Baltic Sea.
Asked whether this would affect Europe`s desire to buy gas from the resource-rich Caspian region, the source said that ``the development of the Southern Gas Corridor remains a Commission priority as it allows for diversification of EU`s gas supplies.``
``The aim is to create a direct link to one of the largest deposits of gas in the world,`` the source added.
The Southern Gas Corridor is a priority energy project for the EU, designed to diversify the routes and sources of supply and thus increase European energy security.
