One pipeline to be selected for Azeri gas exports: Socar head

11 April 2012 14:22 (UTC+04:00)

Head of the Azerbaijani state energy firm Socar, Rovnag Abdullayev, has said only one pipeline project will be selected to transport Azerbaijani gas to European markets.

Three potential routes are being reviewed for gas exports from Azerbaijan. Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) has been selected by the consortium of Azerbaijani Shah Deniz gas field development as a priority route for supplying gas to Italy in southern Europe. The other two pipeline projects, Nabucco and South-East Europe Pipeline (SEEP), have been proposed to deliver Azerbaijani gas to central Europe. Some experts have said two pipeline routes could be selected -- one of them to deliver gas to southern Europe and the other one to supply it to countries in central Europe, but Socar has now ruled out this option.

``Two routes cannot be used at once as [gas] volumes do not allow to do so at this point,`` Abdullayev said. ``But such a route will be chosen that would enable to supply Azerbaijan`s future gas [volumes] to the market.``
