Kazakhstan to up oil transit through Azerbaijan
Kazakhstan will increase oil transit through Azerbaijan as a result of growth in domestic production, Kazakh Ambassador Serik Primbetov told journalists.
``With the increase in oil production, the transit of Kazakh oil through Azerbaijan will be increased and transportation through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline resumed,`` Primbetov said.
According to oil giant BP, the Central Asian state`s oil production in 2010 amounted to 1.75 million barrels per day. The country`s largest oil fields are Kashagan and Karachaganak.
Kashagan is located in the north of the Caspian Sea. According to Kazakh geologists, its reserves are estimated at 4.8 billion tons of oil. Kazakhstan is expected to produce first oil from the field by late 2012.
Karachaganak is one of the largest operating oil and gas fields in the world. It holds 1.2 billion tons of oil and condensate and more than 1.35 trillion cubic meters of gas. About 45 percent of gas and 18 percent of oil produced in Kazakhstan are extracted from this field.
