Azerbaijan to join trans-Adriatic gas pipeline in weeks
Energy ministers of Azerbaijan, Turkey, Greece and Italy are due to sign an agreement late in May under the trans-Adriatic pipeline project on taking Azerbaijan's gas to European markets through Turkish territory.
The statement came at Minister of Energy and Industry Natig Aliyev's meeting with Robert Lombardini, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Swiss energy group Axpo, in Baku on Tuesday.
The EGL energy group, which is majority-owned by Axpo Holding AG, is building the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) jointly with Norway's StatoilHydro. The conduit will transport natural gas from the Caspian Sea and Middle East regions via Greece and Albania, across the Adriatic Sea to Italy and further to Western Europe. The pipeline, which will connect existing gas supply chains in Greece with those in Italy, will become operational in 2012. TAP will have a gas transportation capacity of about 10 billion cubic meters a year, with the option to further expand it to 20 billion cubic meters.
A rival route, the Poseidon pipeline, will soon be on line and eventually connect Italy with Central Asian natural gas sources via Greece. However, TAP is a shorter conduit that is cheaper and more technically viable.
