PM: Moldova seeks imports of Azeri gas

Prime Minister Vladimir Filat has said Moldova intends to import gas from Azerbaijan as part of the Nabucco and Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania-Hungary Interconnector (AGRI) projects seeking supplies of Caspian gas to European markets.

Filat said prior to a visit to Azerbaijan that he would discuss Moldova’s participation in the projects during his meetings with President Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister Artur Rasizada and other officials on Wednesday.

The Moldovan prime minister recalled that he had already discussed the issue with President Aliyev in late September 2011 on the sidelines of the Eastern Partnership summit in Warsaw.

He expressed hope that during his talks in Baku there would be a special focus on the diversification of Moldova’s sources of energy and that important agreements would be reached on implementing joint projects in the future.

Moldova currently imports all of its gas from Gazprom. The Russian natural gas giant owns half of Moldovagaz company’s stock.
