Russia’s Gazprom to ramp up imports of Azeri gas
Russian gas giant Gazprom intends to increase imports of Azerbaijani gas by 50 percent to 3 billion cubic meters in 2012, the company said.
Relevant agreement was reached Thursday at a meeting of Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and Azerbaijani state energy firm SOCAR’s President Rovnag Abdullayev.
According to preliminary data, as of November Gazprom’s gas imports from the South Caucasus republic rose 70 percent compared to 2010 to reach 1.36 billion cubic meters, says a statement posted on Gazprom’s website.
SOCAR signed a contract on gas exports with Gazprom in October 2009. The Azerbaijani company exported nearly 800 million cubic meters of gas to Russia in 2010 and is expected to sell 2 billion cubic meters in 2011.
Azerbaijan’s proven gas reserves amount to at least 2 trillion cubic meters, including gas available at its giant Shahdaniz field in the Caspian Sea, which holds around 1.2 trillion cubic meters.
