SOCAR prepares to transport chemicals via Georgia terminal

Azerbaijan’s state energy firm SOCAR has intensified the activity to build gas facilities at the Kulevi oil terminal in Georgia under the project on transporting chemical products through the facility, a source in SOCAR Energy Georgia told Baku-based Trend news agency last Friday.

The source said the construction work is due to be completed by the end of January 2012. The new facilities are essential to transport chemical products, in particular, propylene.

Another SOCAR source earlier said the development of the project on transporting Azerbaijani state-run chemicals producer Azerkimya's products through the Kulevi oil terminal is being completed.

The terminal was commissioned in the summer of 2008. Its total capacity is 10 million tons of oil per year, including 3 million tons of oil, 3 million tons of diesel fuel, and 4 million tons of fuel oil.

The terminal can accommodate up to 168 tank cars. The facility’s total storage capacity is 320,000 cubic meters, and it is possible to increase it to 380,000 cubic meters in the future. The port has two berths to load petroleum products into tankers with loading capacity of up to 100,000 tons.
