Gas supplies to Georgia resume

Gas supplies to Georgia resume
Azerbaijan resumed gas supplies to Georgia on April 23, president of the Azeri state oil company said, but the price for the deliveries remains uncertain.
Rovnag Abdullayev said 1.5 million cubic meters of SOCAR's gas a day is currently exported to the neighboring country.
"With the rising output in Azerbaijan, the volume may increase in the future," he said but did not specify the price.
The supplies were suspended early in January. Georgia had been meeting its domestic demand on account of Azeri gas since January 2007. The country was buying 1.3m cu. m. a day from Azerbaijan as an additional source of gas in the backdrop of a reduction in deliveries from Russia, which has raised the price. Since March 2007, Georgia has also been receiving gas produced from the biggest Azerbaijani offshore field Shahdaniz through the newly-built Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline that goes through its territory as well as Azerbaijan and Turkey. At the initial stage, 250 million cu. m. is annually supplied to Georgia in transit fees.
Minister of Energy and Industry Natig Aliyev told the conference that Azerbaijan could triple the volume of gas supplies in the coming years. "Research has revealed that there are resources available to increase the country's gas exports from the current 8bn cu. m. to 20-25bn cu. m. or more."
The minister said about 1.2trln cu. m. will be produced from Shahdaniz, which is twice the volume previously predicted. Moreover, 500bn cu. m. could be extracted from the deep-water section of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli fields in the Caspian Sea. In addition to that, prospecting operations are still under way at other fields.
