Azerbaijan plans to up gas exports to its neighbors
Azerbaijan intends to increase natural gas exports to neighboring countries in the near future, head of the state energy firm Socar has said.
Rovnag Abdullayev said Russia, Iran and Georgia are seeking to raise the volume of imported gas.
"There will be a certain increase, but it won’t be a significant one," Abdullayev said.
He added that the resource-rich South Caucasus republic plans to begin exporting gas to Syria, Bulgaria and Greece soon as well.
Azerbaijan produces most of its gas from the giant Shahdaniz field in the Caspian Sea, which launched production in 2006. During the second stage of developing Shahdaniz, which is expected to produce first gas in 2017, Azerbaijan plans to export its gas to European markets.
