Azeri oil could be shipped to Poland this year
Ukrtransnafta, a subsidiary company of Ukraine’s energy firm Naftogaz, plans to begin supplying Azerbaijani oil to Poland through Belarus by the end of 2011, Ukrtransnafta board chairman Alexander Lazorko was quoted by Russian RIA Novosti news agency as saying on Tuesday.
"We are currently in talks with Belarusian company Gomeltransneft and PERN Przyjazn [the operator of Poland’s oil pipelines] to arrange an oil supply route to [the Polish town of] Plock, and, if necessary, further to Gdansk. I think supplies could begin as early as this year."
The oil will be transported through the Odessa-Brody pipeline in Ukraine and further taken to Mozyr, a Belarusian city where it will be pumped into another conduit stretching to Plock.
The Odessa-Brody pipeline was built in 2002 to pump oil from the resource-rich Caspian region to European markets bypassing Russia. The pipeline stood idle for two years and was reversed in 2004 to ship small volumes of Russian oil due to the lack of a pipeline to Plock and Gdansk. Since mid-2010, the pipeline has shipped almost no oil, which has allowed Kyiv to begin using it in reverse mode again.
