BAKU – Over 22.7 million tons of Azerbaijani oil were transported through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) main export pipeline in the first eight months of 2011, according to the state oil company Socar.

Nearly 2.9m tons were pumped via the conduit in August alone.

A total of 166.3m tons of crude have been pumped into the pipeline since it was commissioned in 2006.

Also, nearly 148,100 tons of Tukmenistan’s oil were transported in August 2011, Socar said.

The 1,768 km pipeline transports oil produced from Azerbaijan’s Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) block of fields in the Caspian Sea, condensate from the country’s giant offshore Shahdaniz field, as well as Turkmenistan’s crude.
The pipeline, operated by the international consortium BTC Co, allows to export crude from the oil-rich Caspian Sea without increasing tanker traffic through the crowded Turkish Straits.
