EU to launch talks with Azerbaijan on Nabucco supplies in Sept.: paper

BAKU – The European Union will launch talks with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan on supply of Caspian gas for the Nabucco pipeline in September, Polish neswpaper Gazeta Wyborcza reported quoting an anonymous government source in Warsaw.

Participation of the two countries is critical to the planned EU-backed pipeline, which will pump Caspian gas to European markets bypassing Russia.

Ambassadors of EU countries in Brussels agreed last Wednesday on a mandate for the bloc’s executive European Commission to negotiate with Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan agreements on gas supplies for Nabucco, Gazeta Wyborcza said.

The Nabucco pipeline seeks to carry up to 31 billion cubic meters a year of gas across Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey into southeast Europe and onwards to an Austrian trading hub. According to the pipeline consortium, construction is due to start in 2013 and operations in 2017.
