Nabucco consortium offers to link gas pipeline to Baku
BAKU – The consortium managing the planned Nabucco natural gas pipeline for Europe has made a proposal to extend the conduit from Turkey and Georgia’s borders to the Azerbaijani capital Baku.
According to Nabucco Gas Pipeline International, this would be the most beneficial option to build the pipeline. Michael-Dieter Ulbrich, an official of Austrian OMV, a shareholder in the Nabucco consortium, said the partners in the project on developing Azerbaijan’s giant Shahdaniz gas field in the Caspian Sea are considering a proposal to extend the Nabucco pipeline to Baku, which he said would be a major step forward.
"The project shareholders have made such a proposal, but the Shahdaniz project partners have not passed a decision yet.
"We believe that it would be beneficial to have a direct link between the producers and the market," Ulbrich said.
Nabucco forms part of the so-called Southern Corridor, a series of transit networks meant to move natural gas from Caspian and other regional gas suppliers to European consumers.
