Bush appoints Eurasia energy adviser
US President George Bush has appointed a special envoy on Central Asian and Caspian energy. The post will be held by US ambassador to the European Union Clayland Boyden Gray, the White House said.
Gray will work with European, Central Asian and Russian political and business leaders to advance sustainable development of the region's energy sector and diversify sources of energy. He will also be responsible for enforcing the St. Petersburg principles on G8 energy security and diversity as well as other tasks vested in him by the president and the secretary of state.
Secretary Condoleezza Rice earlier announced the plan to establish the position under the State Department.
The initiative had been put forth by Senator Richard Lugar. The lawmaker said on a visit to Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan in January that he supported closer cooperation with regional states. Lugar also voiced concern over Russia's dominance on energy supplies to world markets, suggesting that the appointment would help protect US interests in the region.
