Azerbaijan may supply 8m tons of oil per year: Ukraine minister

BAKU – Azerbaijan has offered to supply up to 8 million tons of oil per year to Ukraine, Ukrainian Energy Minister Yuri Boiko was quoted by the local media as saying.

He said the Odessa-Brody pipeline will become profitable only when it operates with annual throughput capacity of at least 10 million tons of oil.

"We are looking at several options for loading the pipeline. Along with the existing option of operating it in the reverse mode [to ship Russian oil], there are proposals from Belarus on the transit of up to 5 million tons of Venezuelan crude per year and Azerbaijan has offered to supply up to 8 million tons of oil."

The Odessa-Brody pipeline is one of Ukraine's most ambitious projects. Built in 2002 and designed to carry Caspian oil to Europe with a capacity of up to 14 million tons per year, the pipeline stood idle for two years and was reversed in 2004 to ship Russian oil. The conduit, which links the Ukrainian cities of Odessa at the Black Sea and Brody near the Ukrainian-Polish border, could serve as an additional route to deliver Azerbaijani oil to Europe.
