Turkey says energy projects with Azerbaijan will go ahead

ANKARA – Energy Minister Taner Yildiz has said Turkey does not expect the release of the confidential US cables by WikiLeaks to pose any obstacles to the region’s turning into an energy hub and pledged to go ahead with the energy projects being implemented jointly with Azerbaijan.

One of the cables, allegedly sent by US Charge D’Affairs Donald Lieu to the State Department, quoted Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev as saying in a meeting with US Undersecretary of State William Burns that the real reason Azerbaijan decided to sell gas to Russia last year was "illustrating to our Turkish friends that they will not be allowed to create a gas distribution hub".

Yildiz told reporters that in general, the release of speculative reports from time to time was possible.

"The words claimed to have been stated by honorable Mr. Aliyev, particularly issues related to the energy sector, will cause no tension in our relations with friendly and fraternal Azerbaijan. We will continue our joint projects."
