Turkmenistan eager to boost gas exports via Russia
ASHGABAT – Turkmenistan is eager to boost gas exports via Russia, the country's President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said Friday during a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Reuters reported.
Turkmenistan is Central Asia's largest gas producer and holds the world's fourth-largest natural gas reserves. As of Oct. 1, the country has shipped 7.9 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas to Russia, the world's largest gas producer.
Gazprom plans to buy 10 to 12 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas from Turkmenistan this year, much less than the annual volumes of up to 50 bcm it had bought in the past.
Berdymukhamedov stopped short of mentioning the possible amount of gas the ex-Soviet nation expected to ship to Russia in 2011.
