Iran seeks to boost Azeri gas supplies

TEHRAN – High-ranking Iranian energy officials will soon discuss importing 5 million cubic meters of gas per day from Azerbaijan, an energy executive has said.

Managing Director of National Iranian Gas Company, Mohammad Javad Owji, said an Iranian delegation will visit Azerbaijan by the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

"Our fundamental policy in this field is to buy and sell gas to customers, and presently most of our contracts are like that, and only in the case of Azerbaijan we transit their gas to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic."

According to a gas agreement signed by Iran and Azerbaijan, the capacity of the gas pipeline between the two countries can be increased to transport 2.5m cubic meters daily in the first stage and 5m cubic meters during the second stage.

1m cubic meters of gas is currently imported from Azerbaijan daily and swapped over to Nakhchivan.
