Turkmenistan joins BTC pipeline
BAKU - Turkmenistan has begun transporting oil through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, the project operator BP Azerbaijan said Thursday.
The agreement on transporting the Central Asian state’s oil through the conduit, which pumps Azerbaijan’s crude to world markets through Georgia and Turkey, was signed in July.
The BTC currently transports 800,000 barrels per day, with 4-5 percent of the volume being crude from Turkmenistan.
The bulk is expected to double in late August or early September.
Turkmen crude is delivered to Baku by tankers through the Caspian Sea.
The BTC pipeline allows Ashgabat to export its oil to energy-thirsty European markets bypassing Russia.
The BTC pipeline opened in 2006. The 1768 km conduit transports oil produced from Azerbaijan’s Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) oil block in the Caspian Sea. The pipeline allows exporting oil from the Caspian without increasing tanker traffic through the crowded Turkish Straits.
