Azerbaijan to deliver gas to autonomous region via Turkey
NAKHCHIVAN/AZERBAIJAN - Azerbaijan and Turkey signed an
agreement on Saturday on transporting Azerbaijani gas to the
Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through the neighboring country. The
deal was reached during Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz’s
visit to Nakhchivan, Turkey’s Cihan news agency reported.
500 million cubic meters a year will be delivered to the autonomous
republic through Turkey free of charge, according to the document,
signed by the President of the Azerbaijani state energy firm SOCAR,
Rovnag Abdullayev, and the Turkish state pipeline company BOTAS’s
CEO Fazil Senel.
According to the Turkish energy minister, a pipeline stretching
180-200 km is to be built to link the town of Igdir and Nakhchivan
to deliver gas.
"Details of the pipeline construction will be negotiated separately
between BOTAS и SOCAR," Yildiz said.
The agreement with BOTAS envisions increasing gas supplies from
Shahdaniz, Azerbaijan’s biggest gas field in the Caspian Sea, to
Turkey by 500m cubic meters every year.
In 1921 pro-Armenian Soviet leaders granted Azerbaijan’s Zangazur
region to Armenia, which geographically separated Nakhchivan from
Azerbaijan. Armenia, which unleashed a war on the neighboring South
Caucasus republic with territorial claims, fully took the region
under economic blockade in 1991. Nakhchivan borders on Armenia,
Iran and Turkey.
