Azerbaijan, Greece to launch gas supply talks
BAKU - Azerbaijan and Greece have agreed to launch direct talks on
gas supplies, Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Energy Natig
Aliyev has said.
Greece is currently buying the South Caucasus republic’s gas with the mediation of Turkey’s Botas company.
Aliyev told reporters Wednesday that two Greek companies have appealed to Baku over buying gas directly from Azerbaijan's state energy firm SOCAR. The companies are seeking to import 1 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas per year.
The minister believes Azerbaijan could agree upon gas sales with Greek importers.
"I have told SOCAR that they can start talks. I understand that it is necessary to resolve some outstanding sensitive issues with BOTAS. But I do believe that we can supply 1 billion cubic meters of gas to Greece beginning in 2011."
Azerbaijan began exporting gas to Greece in 2007. The fuel is transported through Georgia to Turkey and further to Greece.
Azerbaijan produces most of its gas from the giant Shahdaniz field in the Caspian Sea. During Phase 2 of Shahdaniz development, due to begin in 2012-2013, gas exports are planned to a number of countries, including European markets.*
