Gas exports to Iran launched
Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR that produces oil and gas
from the country's vast energy fields launched exports of its
natural gas to Iran in February, an energy executive said.
The fuel is delivered through the pipeline of the state-controlled
gas supplier Azerigas. The company's vice-president Nazim Samadzada
said the neighboring country was buying one million cubic meters of
gas per day for $300 per 1,000 cu. m. The contract has been signed
for the supplies of 30m cu. m. of gas but it could be extended in
the future, he added.
The gas is transported through the 1474km Gazi-Muhammad-Astara
(Azerbaijan)-Bind-Biand (Iran) pipe that has the annual capacity of
10bn cu. m.
This comes after another supplier, Turkmenistan, suspended its
exports to Iran in December over technical problems. The Central
Asian state was earlier exporting 23m cu. m. a day. The move
evidently aims to compensate for shortages caused by the suspension
of Turkmen supplies, but Iranian energy executives said the
supplies from Azerbaijan were not intended to replace deliveries
from Turkmenistan.
