US official confident Azeri gas will reach Europe
Special Envoy of the US Secretary of State for Eurasian Energy, Richard Morningstar, has expressed confidence that Azerbaijani gas will be exported to Europe.
He told reporters that the United States was seeking the delivery of gas from the resource-rich South Caucasus republic to European markets particularly through the Southern Corridor. He emphasized that Washington supports the Southern Corridor, Nabucco and other large-scale energy projects.
"We believe that Nabucco is a project of tremendous importance from both political and strategic viewpoints. But which of these projects will be implemented first depends on which of these is more commercially viable," Morningstar said.
The Southern Corridor is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It aims to increase energy security for European countries by diversifying sources of energy and supply routes. The corridor includes the Nabucco, Turkey-Greece-Italy (TGI) and trans-Adriatic pipeline projects. Azerbaijan is one of the potential suppliers for the Nabucco pipeline.
Morningstar said he was content with the discussions he had with President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, which covered a number of issues.
"We had a very productive meeting with Mr. President…The relations between the United States and Azerbaijan are of great importance. Both our president and secretary of state highly value U.S.-Azerbaijan relations. And we hope that these ties will further expand."
