Iran seeks more Azeri gas
Seyyed Reza Kassaizadeh, Managing Director of the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC), has said new pipelines should be built to increase natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan, Iran’s Mehr news agency reported.
He said Iran was seeking to raise the volume of gas delivered annually from the neighboring country to 2 billion cubic meters.
Azerbaijan and Iran signed an agreement in Baku in January on supplying Azerbaijani gas to the neighboring country during January-April, 2010. Under the agreement, signed by Azerbaijan’s state energy firm SOCAR and NIGEC, Azerbaijan was to deliver 100 million cubic meters of gas, or 1.2m cubic meters per day, to Iran. Further, the sides expect to sign a long-term supply deal this summer.
Kassaizadeh said existing infrastructure does not enable supplies in the preferred volume, and the issue is being negotiated. According to him, new pipelines would allow to transport at least 10bn cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas to Iran.
"With the gas imported from Azerbaijan we will have fully supplied Iran’s northern regions with gas," the NIGEC managing director said.*
