Nabucco starts tender process for gas pipeline
The Nabucco consortium has started an initial tender process worth 3.5 billion euros ($4.7 billion) for items such as pipes and valves for the construction of its gas pipeline, the Vienna-based group said on Friday, Reuters reported.
The project plans to transport up to 31 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas a year from the Caspian region to an Austrian gas hub via Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Hungary and reduce Europe's reliance on Russian gas.
"(This) is a substantial step towards starting construction at the end of 2011," Managing Director Reinhard Mitschek said. Companies have to take part by May 17.
Nabucco's shareholders are Austria's OMV, Hungary's MOL, Romania's Transgaz, Bulgaria's Bulgargaz, Turkey's Botas and Germany's RWE. *
