Azeri SOCAR to refine liquefied gas in Turkey
Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR will from now onward refine
liquefied gas produced from the Heydar Aliyev Oil Refinery of Baku
in Turkey. The operations will be carried out by Petkim Holding, a
company controlled by the Azerbaijani-Turkish joint venture
SOCAR-Turcas, according to SOCAR.
The Palmali shipping company will transport 120,000-150,000 tons of
Azerbaijani liquefied gas per year from the Georgian Batumi port to
the Turkish region of Aliagha where Petkim is based.
51 percent of Petkim’s stock was sold to SOCAR-Turcas in November
2007. Petkim is one of the largest petrochemical enterprises in the
region, with a strategic importance for Turkey. The company, built
by the TPAO oil group in 1962, is referred to as "the heart of the
petrochemical industry" in Turkey.*
