Israel says not ready to buy Azeri gas
Israel is in no rush to buy gas from Azerbaijan, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman told the press upon conclusion of his official visit to Baku on Thursday. Lieberman pointed to Azerbaijan’s importance as an oil supplier but said delivering gas from the resource-rich South Caucasus republic was complicated at this point.
"Azerbaijan is one of the key suppliers of oil to Israel. As for gas, since we don’t have a gas pipeline and liquefied gas is not being widely used, it is unfortunately too early to talk about gas supplies. Either a gas pipeline should be built or a special plant created to compress gas. I therefore think this is a very complicated issue."
Lieberman added that Tel-Aviv considered Baku "a successful and serious partner" in oil sector collaboration.*
