Gazprom ‘to buy the most gas Azerbaijan can sell’
Russian gas monopoly Gazprom has said it was ready to buy the
most gas Azerbaijan can offer.
"We will buy as much gas as Azerbaijan will be able to sell," the
company’s Chief Executive Alexei Miller told a meeting.
According to the company’s press-service, Miller said the distinct
feature of the agreement signed by Gazprom and the Azerbaijani
state energy firm SOCAR in 2009 is that it does not specify the
maximum bulk of supplies.
"None of the contracts signed by Gazprom contains such a provision
[limiting the bulk of deliveries]. This is an indicator of the high
level of our partnership ties."
Miller added that the beginning of Azerbaijan’s gas supplies to its
northern neighbor on January 1 paved the way for successful and
mutually beneficial Russian-Azerbaijani cooperation in gas supplies
in the years to come.
Under the supply agreement signed by the two countries, the South
Caucasus republic is to deliver at least 500 million cubic meters
of gas to Russia in 2010. However, SOCAR lately announced
Azerbaijan would double the figure.
Azerbaijan also exports gas to Turkey and Georgia. The country
produces most of its gas from the giant Shahdaniz field in the
Caspian Sea, which holds estimated reserves of 1.2 trillion cubic
meters.*
