Azerbaijan’s north-bound oil exports ‘doubled’

6 January 2010 23:04 (UTC+04:00)
Azerbaijan has doubled exports of oil through the Baku-Novorossiysk northern route pipeline over the past year, according to the state oil company SOCAR.
The resource-rich South Caucasus republic transported about 2.5 million tons of crude via the conduit in 2009, with 140,000 tons delivered in December alone, SOCAR said.
An alternative export route, the Northern Route Export Pipeline (NREP), which stretches from the capital Baku to the Russian Black sea port of Novorossiysk, has been exporting Azerbaijani oil to world markets since 1997.
Azerbaijan produces most of its oil from the major Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli fields in the Caspian Sea. The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) main export pipeline is transporting ACG oil.*
