Azerbaijan to double gas exports to Russia
Azerbaijan will double gas exports to Russia to 1
billion cubic meters in 2010, Rovnag Abdullayev, the president of
the Azerbaijani state energy firm SOCAR, said Saturday.
Under the supply agreement signed by the two countries, the South Caucasus republic is to deliver at least 500 million cubic meters of gas to its giant northern neighbor next year, but the figure will increase two-fold from January 1. "Azerbaijan has the potential to do this," Abdullayev said.
Also, the gas transportation infrastructure linking Azerbaijan with Iran, its southern neighbor, is being overhauled. The SOCAR president said the repair will be completed soon, which will allow exporting 5 million cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas per day to Iran.
Azerbaijan also exports gas to Turkey and Georgia. The country produces most of its gas from the giant Shahdaniz field in the Caspian Sea, which holds estimated reserves of 1.2 trillion cubic meters. *
