Shahdaniz potential source for Nabucco: US official
The United States sees Azerbaijan`s Shahdaniz field,
as well as other sources in the Caspian Sea including those
belonging to Turkmenistan, as potential suppliers of gas for the
Nabucco pipeline, according to US Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel
Poneman.
``During meetings with representatives of the state and oil companies, we had a good opportunity to view a number of possible sources of gas, which will flow via the Southern Corridor,`` said Poneman, who is on visit to Baku.
According to Poneman, the delegation which he chairs held extensive discussions over the Southern Corridor project with Azerbaijani officials on Monday.
``We expect that negotiations will continue and lead to a final decision,`` predicted Poneman.
The deputy secretary of energy said Washington believes it is important that, with the help of companies operating in this field, transparent markets and their functioning should be a basis in deciding which route should be used to transport hydrocarbons. Meanwhile, Vitali Baylarbayov, Deputy Vice-President of the state oil company SOCAR, said Azerbaijan could supply 7 billion cubic meters of gas for the Nabucco pipeline, which will pump Caspian and Central Asian gas to European markets. The volume accounts for nearly a fourth of Nabucco`s throughput capacity, he told the Black Sea economic and energy forum in Bucharest.
The 3,300-kilometer Nabucco pipeline, which will run from eastern Turkey to the Austrian capital Vienna, is expected to come online in 2014. Deliveries by the pipeline, which will bypass Russia, will help energy-thirsty European countries to diversify supplies of energy.
