SOCAR launches gas pipeline in Georgia
SOCAR Georgia Gas, a subsidiary company of
Azerbaijan`s state energy firm SOCAR, which runs gas distribution
networks in Georgia, has commissioned the newly-upgraded Dmanisi
pipeline in the eastern part of the neighboring South Caucasus
republic. The conduit will supply gas to Dmanisi and villages in
the region.
According to SOCAR president Rovnag Abdullayev, SOCAR Georgia Gas will invest $20 million in Georgia this year to build a 800 km gas distribution network to supply 57,000 domestic consumers with gas.
Abdullayev said the project was part of the Georgian government`s program on delivering fuel to the country`s rural areas and SOCAR was closely involved in its implementation.
The Azerbaijani company plans to complete the work on fully supplying Georgia with gas over three to four years, Abdullayev said, adding that Azerbaijan currently meets 75% of the country`s needs for gas.
Georgian Energy Minister Aleksandr Khetaguri, in turn, said that as part of the ``Gas to every village`` state program, 70% of the region`s population will be provided with gas in the next three years with the aid of Azerbaijani partners.
The Azerbaijani energy firm and the Georgian government signed an agreement in December 2008 on transferring 22 regional gas distribution networks to the management of SOCAR Georgia Gas.
