Azerbaijan gets gas import offers from three states
Bulgaria, Israel and Syria have appealed to Azerbaijan over gas imports, Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev has told the local Lider TV channel.
He emphasized that the countries participating in the Nabucco project that will pump Caspian gas to Europe could become the consumers of Azerbaijani gas.
According to the minister, 9 billion cubic meters will be produced from the country`s largest field, Shahdaniz, in 2009, with a goal set to bring production to as much as 25bn cu. m. The objective is to export Azerbaijan`s gas to European markets.
Aliyev said, at this point the real option for gas exports is the Nabucco pipeline, a project that has drawn wide international attention.
"The interest of the European Union, which will be meeting 80 percent of its demand on account of imports by 2030, has increased as well. Following [the signing of] the inter-governmental agreement in Turkey, Europe has expanded its policies around the project. Also, Iran has not held back its intent to join the pipeline after Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. This country may pump 10 billion cubic meters of fuel a year into the conduit. However, these countries` participation in the project is impossible without Azerbaijan."
The 3,300-kilometer Nabucco pipeline -- which will run from eastern Turkey to the Austrian capital Vienna close to the Baumgarten gas hub -- is expected to come online in 2014. When fully operational, it could carry 31 billion cubic meters of gas annually and supply between 5-10 percent of the EU`s projected gas consumption in 2020. The governments of the transit countries - Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and Austria - signed an agreement earlier this month on launching construction of the pipeline. The Nabucco Intergovernmental Agreement is seen as a bid to curb Russia`s dominance on gas supplies to world markets.
