Iran ready to supply gas for NABUCCO
Iran is ready to supply gas for the NABUCCO pipeline that will ship
gas to world markets from the Caspian region and Central Asia to
Europe by-passing Russia, its officials said Tuesday.
"The EU has already pointed out the need to diversify its gas supplies. One of the areas in which Iran can cooperate with Europe in the energy sector is NABUCCO," Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said.
"Russia is the world's biggest gas supplier, followed by Iran. Both countries seek bigger markets," he added.
NABUCCO could help prevent Russian dominance on gas supplies. The project envisions building a 3,300 km-long pipeline under the Caspian Sea to pump gas to world markets by 2011. The conduit will eventually go through Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Austria. The pipe's annual throughput capacity is estimated at up to 31 billion cubic meters. The project will bring Azerbaijan considerable transit revenues.*
