Azerbaijan, Turkey strike no deal on gas supplies
Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR and Turkish state-controlled natural gas monopoly Botas have not succeeded in reaching agreement on the price and volume of gas the South Caucasus republic sells to Turkey and on transporting gas extracted from Azerbaijan`s Caspian field Shahdaniz to Europe following talks held in Baku last week.
The announcement was made by Huseyin Saltuk Duzyol, Chairman of Botas, the operator of the Turkish section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) main export pipeline. He told the Baku-based ANS TV channel, after attending the negotiations, that the outstanding issues would be agreed upon in the near future to meet both sides` interests.
The contract on gas deliveries to Turkey expired in April 2008. Under that deal, Turkey was buying Azerbaijani gas for $120 per 1,000 cubic meters, though other exporters are selling it for at least $300, and even up to $500.
Rovnag Abdullayev, the SOCAR President, told the press that the Azerbaijani side intends to hold regular meetings with Turkey to agree on the price of gas.
"Such meetings might take place at the level of experts. Overall, so long as the market is there, talks should always be held. And since the prices are envisioned for the long term, there should be no hurry in setting them," Abdullayev said.
Turkey hopes to receive 8 billion cubic meters of gas per year to meet domestic demand during Phase 2 of the Shahdaniz development, reports say.
