Russia `respects` Azerbaijan`s participation in NABUCCO
Russia has said Azerbaijan was entitled to passing
decisions on the participation in international energy projects,
including one on the Western-backed NABUCCO project that envisions
gas supplies to Europe.
"This is Azerbaijan`s sovereign right and we respect it. This also pertains to the NABUCCO project," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Azerbaijani media.
The NABUCCO pipeline will deliver about 30 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani and Turkmen gas a year to European markets through a 3,300-kilometer pipeline traveling via the territories of Azerbaijan and Turkey to Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Austria, while by-passing Russia. Azerbaijan`s gas is considered a key source for the pipeline.
Lavrov stressed that economic viability, reliability and environmental safety should be the primary criteria when selecting a route for transporting oil and gas. He made it clear that Russia was opposed to the extreme politicizing of the issue and was in favor of securing multiple supply routes. "Russia shares the notion of the importance of diversifying routes for transporting energy resources as a method to ensure Europe`s energy security," he said.
