CIS heads of security agencies discuss global geopolitical situation

The 40th jubilee session of the Council of Heads of Security Agencies and Special Services of the CIS countries kicked off in Minsk on May 19.

Top issues of the jubilee session included changing geopolitical situation in the world, security problems, progress made in the implementation of the CIS cooperation program against terrorism and other violent manifestations of extremism for 2014-2016.

Addressing the meeting, Madat Guliyev, chief of State Security Service of Azerbaijan, mentioned that the country is highly interested in the further development of cooperation within the framework of the council. “Azerbaijan attaches great importance to international cooperation in the ensuring security,” he said.

The main task of the Council is interaction of national intelligence services in the fight against international organized crime. The participants discussed key aspects of CIS countries’ anti-terrorist activities and efforts to combat terrorist organizations. It was mentioned that in the context of increasing instability in the world, it is especially important for the special services of the CIS countries to increase the efficiency of joint activities and consolidate efforts to ensure safety.

Guliyev said that issues caused by such global problems as terrorism and extremism threaten international security. He also underlined that religious extremism, which is difficult to distinguish from terrorism, also poses a menace for humanity. He expressed his confidence that discussions held within the framework of the meeting will positively affect joint cooperation and trigger increase of efficiency of business relations.

Participants of the meeting underlined that regular exchange of experience, discussion of security problems and finding ways to solve them enhance the efficiency of cooperation of the CIS special services.

Guliyev underlined that Azerbaijan spares no effort in order to ensure safety and prevent the emergence of new threats and challenges.

The Council of Heads of Security Agencies and Special Services of CIS Member-States was created in 1997, based on a decision by the Council of CIS Heads of State, for promoting cooperation and coordinating actions between the states’ security agencies and special services in fighting international organized crime and in other areas of activity.

The next 41st meeting of the Council of Heads of Security Agencies and Special Services of the CIS member will be held in Azerbaijan. The meeting is expected to be held in the third or fourth quarter of 2016.
