Italy`s Berlusconi lauds Azeri policies
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has highly praised the foreign policy pursued by Azerbaijan.
"We appreciate Azerbaijan`s cooperation with the European Union and NATO, its joining the alliance`s stabilization operations and the balanced policy it put forth during the Georgia crisis," he said.
The Italian premier emphasized that Azerbaijan was playing an important role in the Caucasus region. He noted that Rome hoped the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict would be resolved after the signing of a declaration by the Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian presidents in Moscow in early November.
Further, Berlusconi spoke of prospects for political and economic cooperation between Italy and Azerbaijan as well as energy projects. He referred to Italy as the South Caucasus republic`s main trade partner, stressing that bilateral commodities turnover has reached a record high of 3 billion euros this year.
Berlusconi said that after the Turkey-Greece-Italy gas pipeline is completed, his country hopes to import natural gas through a non-alternative route, i.e. via Turkish and Greek territories from Azerbaijan, and the Caspian region as a whole.
"This project, which has long been worked on by Italy`s Edison company, is receiving overall political backing and will be implemented in due time. We are confident that President Ilham Aliyev will facilitate reaching an agreement furthering the solution of all unresolved issues faced by the interested countries."
