Scores of air bombs found up north
Large quantities of aircraft bombs have been found in a northwestern Azerbaijani district. The site of the discovery - the Gyrmyzy Samukh village of the Samukh district - is likely to have been a shooting range for Russian troops during Soviet times, experts say.
Initially, five such bombs had been found in the area. However, after a search was carried out in a 10-hectare territory, it was found that many more were scattered throughout the area. The number of bombs in the upper layer of soil alone has exceeded 70. Warheads are in place on most of the bombs, which are 1.10 meters long and have a diameter of 200 milimeters.
Yashar Huseynov, deputy chief of the Samukh district police department, did not rule out that a subterranean military base once existed in the area.
Specialists of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) have defused the bombs.
