Party leader makes unprecedented offer
An Azerbaijani opposition party leader has offered to set up a TV channel and a radio to air programs in the Armenian language to promote the awareness of the Armenian residents in the occupied Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh region.
Addressing the parliament on Tuesday, chairman of the Whole Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, MP Gudrat Hasanguliyev emphasized that Armenia, which occupies the region, is pursuing extensive propaganda among the local population.
"As a result, Garabagh Armenians, who are citizens of Azerbaijan, are falling under their sphere of influence," the lawmaker said, adding that establishing such media outlets could facilitate conveying the truth to Armenians.
Hasanguliyev also suggested that the government tackle a project on the development of Upper Garabagh as part of the nationwide program on socio-economic development of the regions. The project would reflect the work to be done in the occupied land after it is freed.
"By passing this document, we would provide accurate information to Armenians living in Upper Garabagh about the measures we plan for the development of the region," Hasanguliyev said.
He added that a law on granting Upper Garabagh the status of high autonomy within Azerbaijan should be developed and passed in the legislature.
Upper Garabagh is an Azerbaijani region occupied by the Armenian forces since a 1994 cease-fire ended separatist hostilities that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted about a million out of their homes.
