Crime rate up in 2008
The number of crimes in Azerbaijan increased 14.5%
over ten months of 2008 to reach 17,677, according to the State
Statistics Committee.
9,249 people, including men (57%) and women (43%), received injuries as a result of the crimes. In January-October, 187 criminal cases related to murders and attempts on others` lives, 201 facts of inflicting damage to one`s health, 22 rapes, 163 banditry cases, 286 robberies and 2,689 facts of theft were registered.
In this period, 71% of the crimes were disclosed, with 13% of the offenses committed by individuals with criminal record, while 12% - by groups of persons, 4% by persons under the influence of alcohol, and 3% by juveniles.
14,751 violators were prosecuted in 2007. 77.4% of them were sentenced to imprisonment. 82% of the violators are employed, while 9% are previously-convicted persons, 37% are drunkards, 14% women, and 3% juveniles. 2% of these persons were foreign citizens.
