Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev received a delegation led by Gennady Zyuganov, Chairman of the Communist Party faction in the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, on February 9, AzerTag state news agency reported.

Zyuganov paid tribute to national leader Heydar Aliyev, saying they had friendly relations. He recalled his working under the leadership of the national leader when he held high state post in Moscow.

Touching upon President Ilham Aliyev`s tenure as the head of the Azerbaijani delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Zyuganov said there were close ties between the delegations during those years.

He said Russia highly appreciated Azerbaijani delegation`s supporting the Russian delegation at the recent session of the PACE.

Zyuganov further said Russia was following with interest the rapid development of Azerbaijan`s economy, adding he witnessed great development in the country. He compared Baku with the world`s developed cities, saying he was deeply impressed by rapid development processes in the Azerbaijani capital.

President Aliyev thanked Zyuganov for good words about national leader Heydar Aliyev and development processes in the country.

Recalling his tenure as the head of the Azerbaijani delegation to the PACE, President Aliyev said mutual support and fruitful cooperation were established between the Azerbaijani and Russian delegations since the first day of Azerbaijan`s becoming a member of the organization.

The head of state said the bilateral relations as part of this organization continue today based on these principles.

The sides noted that Azerbaijani-Russian relations were successfully developing in various areas, including between parliaments and in the field of international cooperation. The parties expressed confidence that strategic partnership between the two countries will further deepen and strengthen, and discussed various areas of the bilateral cooperation.

Zyuganov handed a memorial order of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation to President Aliyev.
