Armenian troops breach ceasefire with Azerbaijan

Armenian armed forces have broken the ceasefire with Azerbaijan 74 times in numerous positions in the last 24 hours, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported on January 8.

Armenian armed forces located in the villages of Berkaber of Armenia’s Ijevan district and Barekamavan of Noyemberyan district opened fire at the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces located in the villages of Gizilhajili and Gaymagli of Gazakh district.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijani positions located in the Aghdam village of Tovuz district took fire from the positions located near the village of Mosesgerh of Armenia’s Berd district.

Azerbaijani positions also underwent fire from the positions located near the villages of Chileburt, Gizil Oba of Terter, Tapgaragoyunlu of Goranboy, Yusifjanli, Merzili, Novruzlu, Garagashli, Javahirli, Shikhlar, Bash Gervend, Shuraabad, Shirvanli, Kengerli of Aghdam district, Kuropatkino of Khojavend, Garakhanbeyli, Gorgan, Horadiz, Ashagi Seyidahmadli, Ashagi Abdurrahmanli of Fizuli district.

Moreover, Azerbaijani positions took fire from the positions located at the nameless heights of Goranboy, Khojavend and Fizuli districts.

The enemy was silenced with return fire.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor that caused a brutal war in the early 1990s.

As a result of the military aggression of Armenia, over 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed, 4,866 are reported missing and almost 100,000 were injured, and 50,000 were disabled.

The UN Security Council has passed four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal from the Azerbaijani territory, but they have not been enforced to this day.

Peace talks, mediated by Russia, France and the U.S. through the OSCE Minsk Group, are underway on the basis of a peace outline proposed by the Minsk Group co-chairs and dubbed the Madrid Principles. However, the negotiations have been largely fruitless so far despite the efforts of the co-chair countries over 20 years.
