Baku sees Ankara`s mediation in peace talks as desired, but unlikely
The government of Azerbaijan is seeking Turkey`s closer involvement
in brokering a settlement to the country`s long-running dispute
with Armenia over its occupation of Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, a
senior official has said.
"Turkey is our friend, a fraternal nation and strategic partner, and it is represented in the [mediating] OSCE Minsk Group. But co-chairmanship in the group is formed on the basis of consensus. I believe chances for Armenia`s agreeing to Turkey`s becoming a co-chair are equal to zero," said Novruz Mammadov, head of the President`s Office, international relations department.
He said that if Ankara manages to persuade Yerevan, during its recently launched talks to mediate between the countries, a number of issues would have to be clarified.
"If agreement is reached on what the format will be, which co-chairs will withdraw and which ones will remain, Turkey may become a co-chair of the MG. But I don`t consider this realistic," the presidential administration official said.
The Minsk Group is brokering the Garabagh talks through its co-chairs representing the U.S., Russia and France.
