November 12 sees the next anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of the Azerbaijan Republic.

Azerbaijan’s first Constitution- the basic law of an independent sovereign state - was adopted in a referendum on November 12, 1995.

Adoption of the Constitution is one of the most significant moments in the history of each state. On this day, every Azerbaijani citizen feels his or her involvement in the formation of a free, democratic society aimed to bring a bright future for our generations.

After gaining its long-awaited independence in 1991, the Azerbaijani government had a target to establish public institutions, which are supposed to represent the will of the nation.

Ensuring the well-being of every citizen and protecting the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan were the main objectives pursued by the government in making the basic law of the country.

The people of Azerbaijan, continuing the long tradition of statehood, announced their intention to defend their motherland, guarantee a democratic system and achieve the establishment of civil society. They wished to live in friendship, peace and security with other nations.

The Constitution is not just a declaration of good intentions. It is a real working document which all the citizens should know primarily. As the knowledge and careful application of the laws is the norm of each civilized life and a powerful lever for improving its quality.

Azerbaijan is a democratic, legal, secular and unitary republic under its Constitution.

State power in the country is divided into executive, legislative and judicial. The head of the country is the president, who is elected for a term of 5 years.

Since the adoption of the Constitution and thanks to the successfully-conducted internal and external policies, Azerbaijan has a developing economy creating favorable conditions for the development of entrepreneurship.
