Azeri to get high award for fighting in Georgia
An ethnic Azerbaijani Georgian citizen who was wounded during the
brief war with Russia is expected to receive a special award from
the Georgian government.
Babek Ahmadov, a resident of Gardabani, was wounded during the August hostilities that flared up in Georgia`s unrecognized republic of South Ossetia.
The adviser to the Georgian president, Mubariz Garayev, who enquired about Ahmadov`s condition, said that on the instruction of the head of state, he would receive an order from the government as well as financial aid from local Georgian companies and Azerbaijani companies operating in the neighboring South Caucasus republic.
About 100 Azerbaijani volunteers fought last month in the five-day war with Russian troops. Five of them were injured in battles.
On August 8, Georgian forces tried to retake the separatist region of South Ossetia. Moscow launched an overwhelming counter-attack in the pro-Russian region. An EU-brokered ceasefire was reached on August 17 which envisions the return of both countries` troops to the positions they held prior to the outbreak of hostilities. However, Moscow has yet to fully comply with the agreement. Most Russian troops have been pulled out, but some are still stationed within Georgia.
