Date for trilateral talks on Garabagh set
The timing of trilateral talks among Azerbaijani, Armenian and Turkish foreign ministers on the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict, due to take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (GA) session, have been scheduled. The meeting will take place in New York on Thursday and Friday, CNN Turk TV reports.
The talks will be held with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan acting as mediator. He will first hold separate meetings with his counterparts, Elmar Mammadyarov and Eduard Nalbandian, to be followed by discussions as the three ministers meet.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has said no decisions or joint statements are expected at the meeting.
Baku, Yerevan and Ankara have all indicated they were hopeful that the tripartite talks would be successful.
Turkey believes holding talks in the U.S. with Azerbaijan and Armenia is pivotal and sees the meetings as an opportunity to address all outstanding issues in the region, and as a justification of Ankara`s recent proposal to establish a five-nation Caucasus union to bolster regional stability and well-being.
Armenian Foreign Minister, Eduard Nalbandian, has said progress has been achieved in peace talks, "and now political will is needed." He welcomed the upcoming trilateral meeting, while expressing confidence that Turkey will help speed a settlement to the long-standing Garabagh dispute. At the same time, Nalbandian said, Yerevan is seeking to continue the peace process under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group.
